Wednesday is decision day for the Sam Houston women's bowling team as the Bearkats look to be among the eight teams selected to play in the 2014 NCAA championship Elite Eight.

The NCAA Division I women's bowling national committee will announce their selections Wednesday at 3 p.m. The NCAA Elite Eight will be held Thursday through Saturday, April 10-12 in Wickliffe, Ohio.

The four-year old Bearkat women’s bowling program has earned a berth in the Elite Eight twice before and looks to go three-for-four Wednesday.

“We feel like we have done everything we can to put ourselves in a position to be selected,” Bearkat head coach Brad Hagen said. “We performed well in several of the top national tournaments and posted some outstanding head-to-head wins over top teams. It's up to the committee now."

Win-loss record, results against the top 10 teams in the NCAA RPI standings, strength of schedule and head-to-head scores as among the key factors the committee will use to determine the field.

During the 2013-14 season, Sam Houston has compiled an overall record of 90 victories and 42 losses in dual match play. That includes a 47-38 record against teams in the top 20 and 21 wins over top 10 teams.

Only No. 1 ranked Arkansas State has posted more victories (91). The Bearkats have four wins this season over the ASU Red Wolves and three victories over last year’s NCAA champion Nebraska.

The Bearkats boast a record that includes a victory over every top 10 team in the national rankings except No. 10 Saint Francis (Penn.), a team Sam Houston has not played.

Sam Houston stands No. 7 in the most current NCAA R.P.I. ratings and No. 9 in strength of schedule.

All eight berths in the national tournament are at-large selections. Seedings for the Elite Eight are set during the first day of the NCAA event as the squads play a round-robin schedule. Double elimination match play begins on the second day.

"Whatever happens, I'm proud to the job our girls have done this year," Hagen said.
