Bearkat director of athletics Bobby Williams accepted both the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy and the Southland Men’s All-Sports Cup Tuesday night at the annual Southland Conference Honors Dinner Tuesday night at the Westin Stonebriar Resort in Frisco, Texas.

The presentation by Southland commissioner Tom Burnett marked the fifth time Sam Houston has won the Commissioner’s Cup.

No other Southland Conference member – past or present – has won five Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophies. The Bearkats won in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2013 and now 2014.

Sam Houston stands as the only Southland athletic program to win the award in consecutive seasons.

The Bearkats’ point total of 176.5 in the 2013-14 Commissioner’s Cup race stands as a Cup record, topping Texas State’s mark of 175.5 points in 2003-04.

“The great thing about winning the Commissioner’s Cup is that it represents a team effort by all of our Southland Conference sports programs,” Williams said. “This is a championship for all of our student-athletes.”

When Williams became Sam Houston’s director of athletics in April, 1998, he set two goals for the department. The first was to define the term “student-athlete.” The second was to win the Southland Commissioner’s Cup, symbolic of the league’s all-sports championship in both men’s and women’s competition.

Not only has Sam Houston won the Commissioner’s Cup All-Sports title but also the Kats have brought home the men’s all-sports trophy in 2000, 2007 and 2014 and the women’s all-sports cup last season.

Since the 1999-2000 sports season, Sam Houston has won 23 regular season and six post-season tournament Southland championships. In addition, Bearkat teams have made 26 NCAA Division I post-season appearances.

In the class room, Sam Houston student-athletes produced a 3.04 overall semester grade point average last fall. The overall career GPA for the athletic department through the 2013 fall semester is 3.06.

Since 2007, 15 Bearkats have earned league recognition as their individual sport’s “Student-Athlete of the Year” a total of 18 times. The award is based on both performance in the arena and in the classroom.

Sam Houston State won team championships in baseball, men’s golf and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field on its way to claiming the 2014 Commissioner’s Cup.

In addition to its four team championships, Sam Houston got runner-up finishes from the softball and men’s indoor track & field teams. Four other teams finished third, including the men’s basketball and the outdoor track & field teams as well as football and volleyball, each of which tied for third.

The Sam Houston men had 85.5 points to claim the men’s all-sports trophy ahead of Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin, which tied for second place with 74 points each.

The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually. The Southland Conference all-sports trophies for men’s and women’s competition based on a 10-point system for all conference sports. Point values are 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1, pending place of finish. Regular-season standings are used for sports that have a conference tournament. The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the university compiling the highest combined total of men’s and women’s all-sports points.
