Sam Houston student-athletes from the University’s 17 NCAA intercollegiate sports teams collected 300 pounds of pop tabs in the Bearkats’ annual Pop Tab Collection Drive to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House.
The project is one of several community service efforts spearheaded by the Sam Houston State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Other projects include the Bearkat Mentor Program, the Southland Conference “Twelve Days of Christmas”, the Backpack Buddies Fight Hunger Program, “Think Pink” and “Pink Out” to raise awareness of for breast cancer awareness, the Athletic Department Trash Bash, reading programs with HISD elementary schools and helping unload Houston Food Bank trucks.
“It’s great the way all the sports teams pitched in to help with the Pop Tab Project,” Ashley Fluty, Sam Houston soccer athlete and a SAAC officer said. “We appreciate all their hard work and the donations from athletic department staff members and their families as well.”
