LaToya Bennett, Sam Houston State Women's Basketball Alumni, rejoined her former head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols’ staff at Sam Houston State University as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Bennett played 2 years for the WBCBL Semi Pro League (2012-2014). She played for Sam Houston from 2004-2008 as a forward/post player. She was one of the strongest undersized players at her position at Sam through those years.
Bennett is a 2003 graduate of New Waverly High School, where she lettered in basketball, track, and cross country all four years. She was named captain her sophomore year in basketball and remained until her senior year. Bennett was nominated to second-team all-district her sophomore year, first-team all-district her junior year, and the district's unanimous MVP her senior year when she averaged 24.4 points a game 12 rebounds and five assists in 2003. She was First-Team All-Region and Second-Team All State that same year.
Bennett is a 2008 graduate of Sam Houston State, and holds a BS in kinesiology/english. She also holds a M. Ed degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix at Arizona which was achieved in 2015.
Before joining Sam Houston State, Bennett was the special education coordinator/lead teacher, a PBIS coach, associate head coach for girls basketball, and assistant girls track coach at Huntsville High School. Bennett worked at Huntsville for eight years.
Bennett is a native of New Waverly, TX where much of her family still resides.
