SAN ANTONIO – The Sam Houston State Bearkats put three players in double figures, but could not withstand a three-point barrage from the UIW Cardinals in an 82-55 defeat at the McDermott Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
UIW (8-18, 6-9 SLC) drained 13 shots from beyond the three-point arc and got 20 points and 20 rebounds from Celia Garcia Paunero on the day and never allowed the Kats (2-22, 2-12 SLC) any closer than 11 points in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW opened up on fire, canning 3-point buckets on each of their first three possessions of the game on their way to hitting six in the first quarter. Sam Houston got a pair of scores from Lydia Baxter, but hit just 28.6 from the field in the period, trailing 22-10 after a quarter of play.
The lead grew to as much as 16 early in the second quarter before the Kats got something going. A layup from Jasmine MCCants and threes from Morghen Day and Tia Harston sparked a 13-2 Bearkat run that trimmed the deficit to just 28-21 with 6:28 left in the half.
But UIW answered with the next six points and ended the half on a 15-4 run, getting its ninth triple of the half in off-balanced fashion from Cheyenne Berry at the halftime buzzer to take a 43-25 lead into the break.
Sam Houston held the Cardinals to just 4-for-15 shooting in the third quarter and cut the lead all the way down to 51-40 on a three-point play from Jenniffer Oramas. But, again UIW responded with a run of its own, closing the quarter by scoring eight of the final 10 points.
Oramas got the deficit back to a dozen by scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter, but UIW turned in a 18-2 run over the next five minutes to put the game away.
The Bearkats return to Johnson Coliseum to open up their final homestand of the season on Thursday when they host Northwestern State in the first of three straight home games. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
