RUSTON, La. – Tori Koerselman went 4-for-4 and Casey Kauder struck out six as the Sam Houston State Bearkats won their third game in a row, 9-1 in five innings, over Grambling in the finale of the Louisiana Tech Classic at the Louisiana Tech Softball Complex.
The Kats (5-8) jumped on the Tigers (3-13) for six runs in the first two innings on their way to their third run-rule victory over Grambling this season.
Kauder picked up her second win of the season in tossing all 5.0 innings. She punched out six Tiger hitters on the day and allowed just three hits, while only having to work out of one jam in the game.
Caitlin McDowell allowed all nine runs for the Tigers in taking the loss. Of the nine runs, only four were earned, but the Kats were still able to total 14 hits and did not go down on strikes once in the game.
The Tigers put together a two-out rally in their first at-bat of the game with an error, hit batter and a walk loading the bases. But Casey Kauder was able to set down Versace Hicks-Butler to strand three and keep Grambling off the scoreboard.
The bottom half of the inning saw the Bearkats get their offense going from the very beginning. Tori Koerselman bunted her way on to open the inning and then stole second base to get into scoring position. Two batters later Codi Carpenter put the Kats in front with an RBI single up the middle. A single by Kaitlynn Dawson and an error scored another run, and the lead grew to 4-0 by the end of the frame after an RBI ground out from Tiffany Thompson and an RBI single by Katie Andrie.
After Kauder worked around a two-out triple in the top of the second, Sam Houston got a pair of runs back on the board. Megan McDonald reached on the second Grambling error of the game to start the inning and Koerselman followed with her second straight single. Sam Houston then got sacrifice flies from Megan Crosby and Dawson to push the lead to 6-0.
The Kats tacked on another in the third with back-to-back extra-base hits from McDonald and Koerselman. A one-out ground-rule double from McDonald was followed by an RBI triple from Koerselman, upping the lead to 7-0.
Grambling got a run back on a solo home run from Allye Hartley in the fourth, but the Kats were still able to close things out early in the fifth. Koerselman’s fourth hit of the game started the frame and two batters later Carpenter delivered her second RBI hit of the game with a single back up the middle. Thompson then followed that up three batters later with a single to left field to score Dawson and end the game in run-rule fashion.

Sam Houston finished with 14 hits in just five innings, with Koerselman finishing the day 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot. The senior scored three times and drove in another. Meanwhile, Carpenter picked up three hits of her own and two RBI while Dawson had two hits and a pair of runs scored.
