EDINBURG – The Sam Houston State Bearkats made their way back into the win column on Sunday, snapping a six-match losing skid with a 5-2 win over UT Rio Grande Valley at the Orville Cox Tennis Complex.
"I am obivously happy with the win the team secured today and the fact they came through on the doubles point," head coach Rob Hubbard said following the match. "We did have a couple of hiccupsthat we will need to work on this week in preparation for the start of conference play against SFA on Thursday."
Sam Houston (3-6) took an early lead in its non-conference finale by taking the doubles point, but had to do so in comeback fashion after Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra cruised past Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee, 6-0.
But the duo of Ema Barkovic and Diane Friedrichs evened things up by taking down Chloe Leclere and Amanda Guardia (6-0), setting up Mila Milanovic and Carrie Casey to secure the point with a 6-2 win over Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva.
"Diane (Friedrichs) and Ema (Barkovic), our sophomore captain, both had big days as they won both their singles and doubles matches," Hubbard said.
Sam Houston wrapped up the match with wins in four of the six singles lines, starting with Milanovic in a dominating straight-set win (6-1, 6-1) over Guardia at the No. 5 spot. The lead grew to 3-0 after Friedrichs took care of Leclere (6-4, 6-1) and Barkovic clinched the victory when she finished off Esparza (6-1, 6-3).
Gettwart also got a win on the day, picking up the No. 1 singles point with her victory over Darzyan (6-3, 6-2).
With non-conference play now in the books, the Bearkats will turn their attention to the start of Southland Conference play. The Kats will host Stephen F. Austin in the SLC opener on Thursday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m.
