HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats squared up their conference record on Friday, blowing past UIW by a 6-1 margin at the McAdams Tennis Center.
Coach Rob Hubbard’s crew had no issues disposing of the Cardinals (3-12, 0-3 SLC), taking the doubles point before claiming each of the top five singles matches to win going away. Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee each had big days for the Kats (5-9, 2-2 SLC), teaming up to clinch the doubles point with a win on the No. 1 court before each claimed their singles matches in straight-set fashion.
Gettwart and Wee’s clinching 7-5 win over the Cardinal tandem of Matea Zemunik and Rachel Sadiq came after Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic set the table to clinch with a 6-1 win on the No. 2 line over Victoria Kareh and Sarah Savedra. The Cardinals had tied things up in doubles with a No. 3 win before the Kats finished it off on the firsts court.
Milanovic picked up the first singles point of the day for the Kats with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Maria Batchinksy on the No. 5 court, her second consecutive singles win of the week. The Cards then picked up a point on the No. 6 court, but Sam Houston responded not long after when Casey took down Savedra at No. 4 play by a 6-0, 6-4 margin.
The Kats then played downhill for the remainder of the match, taking each of the next three points to finish it off. The first of those came from Wee, who provided the clinching singles point with a 6-3, 6-1 vicotry over Kareh on the No. 3 line, her fourth win in her last five singles matches.
Gettwart then finished off Sadiq by a 6-4, 6-3 score and Ema Barkovic picked up her first victory in the No. 1 spot when she outlasted Zemunik 2-6, 6-4 (10-9).
The Kats will look to pick up a big win on their home court when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at 11 a.m.
