WACO – Sam Houston State got five hits on the night and a home run from Tiffany Thompson, but that wasn’t enough to get past No. 14 Baylor as the Bears picked up a 4-1 win on Tuesday at Getterman Stadium.
Sam Houston (12-15) got hits from five separate players in the game and had its leadoff hitter on base four times, but could not take advantage against the nationally-ranked Bears (26-5). Tayler Atkinson was solid once again against a tough opponent, battling through 5.0 innings with three strikeouts in taking the loss.
Meanwhile, Baylor got three of its RBI from Shelby Friudenberg and a pair of hits from Jessie Scroggins in a seven-hit attack that proved to be just enough for the win. Kelsee Selman picked up her 13th victory of the season, striking out nine in 5.1 frames without a walk. Shelby McGlaun earned her second save with 1.2 innings of relief.
Baylor took the lead early in the game, but Atkinson managed to keep the damage at a minimum in the opening frame. Consecutive singles by Scroggins and Walker quickly put the Bears in business and a sacrifice bunt by Hawkins advanced each a base for the middle of the order. Friudenberg then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Scroggins before the Kats got McGlaun to ground out to keep a runner on and the Baylor lead at just 1-0.
Sam Houston got its best scoring chance of the game in the fifth, but could not capitalize. Codi Carpenter led things off with a single and one batter moved to third on a Baylor error that also allowed Megan Crosby to reach first. But Sam Houston was not able to put another ball into play in the inning as Selman responded with three consecutive strikeouts to leave the runners stranded on the corner.
The Bears upped the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, getting singles from Browder and Scroggins opening up the inning. The pair executed a double of steals one out later and after a strikeout of Hawkins, the Kats were just one out from getting out of the frame unscathed. But Friudenberg cashed in for the Bears with two outs, doubling center field to score both.
Thompson got Sam Houston on the board in the top of the sixth, blasting her second home run of the season out to left field with one out in the inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Tori Koerselman followed with a walk and another Baylor error put runners on the corners with two down, but McGlaun, who had entered in relief, coaxed a ground ball out of Crosby to end the inning.
The Bears got that run back an inning later with a one-out error and a double setting the table for Baylor. A walk to Browder loaded the sacks and Scroggins got the fourth Baylor run of the game home on a grounder to second.
Sam Houston jumps right back into conference play this weekend when it hosts Central Arkansas in a three-game set. The series opens up with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
