Following several stints as an assistant coach across the country, including most recently at James Madison, Ellie Davis has joined the Sam Houston State soccer program in the same capacity, head coach Tom Brown recently announced.

As an assistant with the Dukes a season ago, Davis helped JMU to a second-straight appearance in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals after posting a 5-4 league record. The squad ranked first in the conference in points (4.80/average) and third in goals (34).

Prior to JMU, served as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure from 2015-16. She also worked with both Kennesaw State (2011) and Indiana (2014) as a volunteer assistant in recent seasons.

“She is a good coach and brings some outside experiences with her to this team,” Brown said. “I am able to give her parts of training and that allows me to see the big picture at times.  It is hard to see that when you are in the trenches coaching all the time.  Ellie does a good job of challenging the players about what kind of team they want to be.”

Outside of the collegiate ranks, Davis worked on the Olympic Development Program Region I staff after spending 11 years with the Georgia ODP staff. While in Georgia she also worked with Tophat Soccer Club in Atlanta from 2008-14 and was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Silverbacks of the W-League in 2006.

“I am so excited to be here at Sam Houston State and in the state of Texas,” Davis said. “Thanks to Tom and Cory for the opportunity to work with this program.  I was fortunate to meet many of the players during the interview process.  I was impressed with their attitude and commitment to the program and wanting to continue to improve individually and as a team.”

Davis played for the women's club team at Clemson before the school started its varsity program. She then saw time with three different W-League teams: the Mile High Mustangs, Jacksonville Jade and New Jersey Wildcats.

Davis earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management and an MBA in International Business from Clemson before adding a degree in Secondary Education/Math from Kennesaw State. She holds a B-Level coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation and an Advanced National license from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

“Ellie’s other experiences allow her to bring some new ideas to our training and our teams development,” Brown said. “She will have seen some things that have worked elsewhere and suggest those things to help make us successful.”
