HUNTSVILLE – After 36 holes of golf, the Sam Houston women’s golf team is just a stroke behind Houston Baptist at the SHSU Bearkat Women’s Invitational.

The Kats were consistent both rounds, opening with a 295 and following that up with a 297. HBU bounced back from an opening 303 to shoot a 288 in the second round to take the lead heading into Tuesday’s final round at Raven Next Golf Club.

Jenna Phillips is tied for the lead with HBU’s Lexi Brooks. Phillips opened with the best round of the opening 18, shooting a 1-under 70. She followed with a 73 in the second round to sit at 1-over par.

Hanna Alberto had the best round of the day, shooting a 68 in the second round and currently sits in third place, one stroke back.

QUOTEABLES: Head coach Brandt Kieschnick on the first day… “We started out really well. We had an eight shot lead which is what you want. The girls were focused. We didn’t play as well in the second round but I feel good about this team. Hanna bounced back with a 68 and Jenna has been solid. We just need the weather to hold. We have some bad weather forecasted. We have a chance to win on the last day.”

Head coach Brant Kieschnick on Alberto’s second-round 68… “I was going to give her a pep talk on the fourth hole today. She shot a 76 and I know she was down. By the time I got to her, she had made two birdies already. I know she wasn’t really good. This was a good opportunity to respond which she did. These girls are competitors. We’re excited about a chance to win.”

Head coach Brandt Kieschnick on being able to host the tournament… “We get to showcase our host course. We get some great conference schools that come in. There’s some good programs here. To come out this morning was a big confidence builder. We made some bogies coming in but you need these battles early on to see where you stack up.”

Jenna Phillips on her strong opening day and playing on her home course… “Coach told me just to think shot-by-shot and don’t think about my score. I really focused on that. I made a bogey early on so that brought me back down to earth and kept grinding. It helps a ton knowing the lines and really focusing on those. We know the slopes and the greens and where it miss.”

Jenna Phillips on the feeling amongst the team after day one… “We were definitely happier with the first round but Hanna (Alberto) really helped with the 3-under in the second round. We’re definitely ready to improve on the third round. We focus a lot on focus entering tomorrow and sticking to our game plan.”
