Jaime Gonzales is in his first year serving as assistant coach with the Sam Houston State women's basketball program. The former director of operations for the program and Sam Houston graduate comes to Huntsville following his recent stint at Odessa College.

There, Gonzales helped the Lady Wranglers send four players to NCAA Division I institutions while the squad advanced to the Elite 8 of the NJCAA National Tournament.

“Having Jaime a part of our program will be awesome,” Nichols said. “He’s a former Bearkat who has been part of building the women's program since the day I came on campus over 12 years ago when he was a student assistant. Anytime you can have a Bearkat on staff shows recruits that Sam Houston is the place to be. He is energized, full of energy and will show that in his coaching.”

He was also integral in the development of 2nd Team All American, WJCAC MVP and Freshman of the Year guard Mariah McCully; first-team all-region guard Chinna Fair; first-team all-conference post Leticia Soares and WJCAC Honorable Mention post Moa Lundqvist.

“Sam Houston State University is my alma mater, therefore, I am very excited to come back and be a part of the Huntsville and Bearkat community,” Gonzales said. “It is a pleasure for Dr. Hoyt, Coach Williams and Coach Nichols to allow me to come on board during such an exciting time in Bearkat Athletics.  Coach Nichols has been my mentor for 11 years and I cannot wait to help her as much as she has helped me.”

Prior to Odessa College he led the varsity boys’ basketball team at Conroe’s Calvary Baptist School to their first playoff berth in several years while three players received all-district accolades. He also led the Eagles flag football team to the consolation trophy in the Texas State Playoffs as a head coach.

Gonzales spent the spring of 2015 as a volunteer assistant for head coach Ara Baten and the Lady Wranglers. During that time he helped the team finish second in the WJCAC and earn a berth into the Region V Tournament.

Prior to coming to Odessa he served as assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator for women’s hoops at Hill College (2014). His duties included travel, fundraising, recruiting and individual skill development.

During the 2013 season Gonzales was the Director of Basketball Operations for Women’s Basketball here at Sam Houston State University. He also took part in the development of the guards as well as junior college recruitment and the academic success of the team.

“Jaime will work with the development of the guards and I know will do a good job,” Nichols said. “With having Junior College experience he will help with our JUCO recruiting to bring in experience young ladies to Sam Houston.”

As the recruiting coordinator at Arizona Western College he assembled a team that finished seventh in the final NJCAA women’s basketball poll in 2010.  The season prior Gonzales helped lead the team to the Region I championship. He was also in charge of post coaching, instrumental in developing one of the Matador post into an All American, Conference Freshman Player of the Year, and All Region - 1st Team player.

Gonzales was the boy’s assistant basketball coach at Huntsville’s Heritage Champions Academy in 2008.  He was also the head cross country coach, and taught PE, science, and health.

After graduating college he spent one year as the recruiting coordinator and post coach at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas.  He helped the women’s basketball program to earn a berth in Region VI tournament.

Gonzales graduated from Sam Houston State University in August 2007 with a BS in Kinesiology including an emphasis in coaching.  During the 2006 season he was a student assistant for the Bearkats women’s basketball team.

Prior to attending Sam Houston State University, Gonzales proudly served in the United States Army as an artillerymen for eight years. He is currently working on his Masters in Kinesiology at the University of Texas Permian Basin and he resides in Huntsville with his wife Mercedes and there three of their children Alexavier, Arissa, and Ajai.
