HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State will not have to wait for another shot at rival Stephen F. Austin.

The Bearkats fell, 2-1 in double-overtime to the Ladyjacks on Friday night at Pritchett Field in the regular-season finale. By virtue of the result and a Lamar win against McNeese, Sam Houston opens the Southland Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 11 a.m. as the seven-seed against two-seed SFA.

The Kats (7-8-2, 4-5-2) jumped ahead with the matches’ first goal in the 80th minute as Carlota Suarez Crespo fired in past the keeper for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. However, the lead was short-lived.

Six minutes later, SFA’s Katelyn Termini found an open net after Sam Houston goalkeeper Christina Hendershot went down on the play. The keeper had to be carried off the field and without a foul called, the Ladyjacks (11-7-0, 8-3-0) extended the game.

Termini eventually snapped Sam Houston’s five-match unbeaten streak, doing so with four minutes remaining in the second overtime to vault the Ladyjacks to the win. Carli Arthurs provided the winning assist as SFA out-shot Sam Houston, 4-1 in the overtime periods.

The physical match featured one yellow card and a red card as Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown was ejected from the match following the first SFA goal and the injury to Hendershot. The transfer was replaced in net by Anna Kaiser who fell to 2-3-0 in the loss.

Head coach Tom Brown on the 2-1 double-overtime loss…
“I thought the girls performed really well. We created some good chances in the first half. Obviously, Carlota was able to get one to squeak in on the near post. I was disappointed on the play that allowed them to score. I really thought our goalkeeper was fouled. We gave up one late in the second overtime. We’ll get after it tomorrow with some light training and get ready for the tournament.”
