HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State’s Kassandra Luna has been recognized for her performance in the classroom and in the field of competition.

The junior has been named to the Southland Conference Cross Country All-Academic Second Team, the league office announced Monday. The accolade is voted upon by one academic representative, coach and sports information director from each of the conference’s 13 institutions.

The Houston native owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA, and is working towards her degree in interdisciplinary studies. As of the conclusion of the spring 2017 semester, she is one of 14 student-athletes at Sam Houston to boast a 4.0 overall GPA.

The Cy Fair High School product earned her best finisher on Oct. 6 at the Aggieland Open. There, Luna captured 42nd among 59 competitors in the 5K behind a mark of 22:02.3. She also took 71st at the Southland Conference Championships in Abilene with a time of 24:41.8.

Luna is one of 10 student-athletes to be honored as either a first or second-team honoree. Each nominee must have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA, have competed in one full academic year at the nominating institution and have participated in 50 percent of the team’s competitions during 2017.
