HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the first time in more than a month, Sam Houston State hits the road.

The Bearkats visit Southern Miss on Friday with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m. from Reed Green Coliseum. Sam Houston will spend four of its next five games away from home after a season-high five straight, spanning 26 days, in Huntsville.

Sam Houston (3-3) has already matched its total wins from a season ago and heads into Friday’s matchup riding a two-game win streak including a 74-68 overtime victory against Jackson State last time out. The Kats outscored the Tigers by six in extra time after Kevyn Ferriera drained a contested jumper with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.

The squad will be tasked with slowing down a Southern Miss (6-3) team that ranks 38th nationally and third in Conference USA for field goal percentage (45.3). The Golden Eagles have been tough at home, owning a 5-1 record at Reed Green Coliseum, one season after finishing 15-2 at the facility.

Sam Houston enters play ranked second nationally for the fewest fouls committed (104), eighth in offensive rebounds per game (18), 18th in rebounds per game (45.33) and 23rd in 3-point field goal percentage defense (25.0).

Those numbers were reflected in Tuesday’s win as the Bearkats brought in 50-plus rebounds for the third time this season and limited Jackson State to 1-of-12 from behind the arc. Four Sam Houston players finished in double figures including Lydia Baxter, who finished one rebound shy of a double-double.

Sam Houston returns home to face former Southland Conference rival, Texas State, at 3 p.m. on Sunday from Johnson Coliseum. It will be final home non-conference matchup and second-to-last non-conference game. For the latest, visiting and follow @BearkatsWBB on Twitter.
