HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats will try to open up Southland Conference play on a high note on Saturday afternoon when they take on Abilene Christian at Moody Coliseum.
Saturday’s game can be watched and listened to online at ACUSports.com and fans can also follow along for live updates via Twitter by following @BearkatsWBB.
The Kats dropped their last two games to end non-conference play to Texas State and at LSU, but have the opportunity to make an immediate splash in the league against the Wildcats who have claimed at least a share of each of the last two league titles, going 33-3 in SLC play during that span.
ACU is in its first season of postseason eligibility after completing a four-year transition from Division II and had its league opener on Thursday, defending its home court with an 80-70 win over New Orleans. The Wildcats put five players in double figures in that game and connected on 11 3-point baskets.
Sam Houston got 19 points from Jenniffer Oramas and 12 rebounds on Dec. 27 at LSU, outscoring the Tigers 23-8 in the fourth quarter of a 13-point loss to the Tigers in what was the Kats’ final non-conference game of the year.
The Kats rank fourth in the league in rebounding, but will have their work cut out for them against an ACU team that leads the league in that category and is outrebounding its opponents by nearly 10 boards a game. They also lead the league with 9.7 made 3-point baskets per game.
