HUNTSVILLE – With straight set victories in each of the top five singles, the Sam Houston women’s tennis team opened its 2018 dual match schedule with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Prairie View A&M Friday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center.

The victory marked the third year in a row and the fourth time in the last five seasons for the Kats to open the spring with a dual match victory.

Sam Houston got off to a strong start by earning the doubles point as Rosalie Gerritsen and Fabienne Gettwart paired to defeat Jessica and Stacy Lackey 6-1 at the number two position and Lusine Chobanyan and Sahaja Yamalapallie topped Jamena Duran-Castellanos and Tatiana Ruhl 6-2 at number three.

Gettwart continued the momentum, posting the first singles point with a 6-0 6-1 victory against Stacy Lackey in the number one position. Chobanyan added another point with a 6-0 6-0 blanking of Castellanos at number five.

Mila Milanovic provided the dual match clincher by defeating Shaddae Findley 6-2 6-2 at number four. Yamalapalli and Casey followed up wins at number 2 and 3 for points five and six, respectively.

“It’s always great to win the opener,” Hubbard added. “The girls did well overall. We struggled in a couple of spots, but that’s normal for an opener, especially with the problems with the weather this week. We worked hard during the fall to get stronger. We got a lot accomplished with our work the past week getting ready for this match. We had three newcomers playing in their first dual match for Sam Houston today and I was impressed with the way they handled themselves.”

The newest member of the Bearkat squad, freshman Rosalie Gerritsen of the Netherlands, made her debut Friday. Joining the team during the semester break, Gerritsen saw her first action in the doubles victory at number two then lost at number six single 6-4 6-3. Chobanyan, a transfer from UT-Arlington, and Yamalapalli, a true freshman, also made their Bearkat dual match debuts today.

“We’re extremely excited to have Rosalie join us,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “With one of our top six sidelined by an illness today we had to put her in the lineup. She hasn’t hit a ball outdoors since last August but came out and gave a strong effort. She’s going to be an outstanding addition to our team. Sahaja and Lusine had impressive performances in tournament play in the fall and didn’t disappoint today. We definitely have areas where we need to improve but this was a good start today against a much improved Prairie View team.”

Sam Houston’s next action will be a road match with national tennis power Texas A&M in College Station next Friday, January 26.
