HUNTSVILLE – Lusine Chobanyan has been named as Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week the league office announced Tuesday.

The sophomore from Yerevan, Armenia, becomes the first Sam Houston player to earn the weekly honor since Irina Sotnikova received the award two times during her senior season in 2009.

Chobanyan won twice last weekend, posting straight set singles victories at the number six position against players from two nationally-prominent NCAA Division I programs.

Friday in College Station, Chobanyon won 6-4 6-4 over Texas A&M’s Ilulia Ivascu. She followed up with a 6-1 6-2 victory against Ana Glumac from the University of Houston.

"Lusine is coming up big for us in singles," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "She had two outstanding performances against top teams this weekend."

Chobanyan is unbeaten in three singles matches in dual match play with all three wins coming in straight sets. Her victory in the season opener a week ago came in the number five singles. Counting fall tournament action in September and October, the transfer from UT Arlington stands 10-3 in singles this fall.

Sam Houston will compete a three-match road swing Saturday, Feb. 3, when the Bearkats take on the UTSA Roadrunners in a non-conference contest in San Antonio. Next home action for the tennis team will be Friday, February 9 when the Kats play host to Louisiana Tech at 2:30 p.m. at the McAdams Center.
