Sam Houston State (1-2) vs. UTSA (2-0)
HUNTSVILLE – The Bearkat women’s tennis team renews its rivalry with former Southland Conference foe UTSA when Sam Houston travels to take on the Roadrunners Saturday in the Alamo City.
The Kats will be seeking their second dual-match victory of the young 2018 season. The Roadrunners stand 2-0 after defeating Prairie View A&M 5-2 and Stephen F. Austin 4-3. Sam Houston opened its season two weeks ago with a 6-1 victory over Prairie View. The Kats lost 5-2 to nationally-ranked Texas A&M and 6-1 to Houston on the road last Friday and Sunday, respectively.
“This is an important match for us,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “In two of our four fall tournaments we matched up with UTSA in some close individual matches. They came here to Huntsville for our inaugural fall invitational tournament in October. They are a talented team. We know this is going to be a battle.”
There were several bright spots in the Bearkats’ two losses last week. Sophomore Lusine Chobanyan earned Southland Conference women’s tennis Player of the Week honors after winning against both A&M and UH at the number six position. Senior Carrie Casey picked up a victory at the number four position against the Aggies as well.
“We took away some good things from both matches but we had lots to work on this week as we prepare for UTSA,” Hubbard said. “We competed extremely hard last week and we’re going to need a similar effort to get back on track Saturday.”
Saturday’s date with UTSA will complete a three-match road swing for the Bearkats. The Sam Houston women return home on Friday, February 9 to play host to Louisiana Tech. First serve is at 2:30 p.m. at the McAdams Tennis Center.
SHSU vs. UTSA SERIES RECORD

The Roadrunners hold a 10-2 margin on their home courts. UTSA won the last three meetings in tight matches in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Sam Houston’s last victory over the Roadrunners was a 5-2 win in Huntsville in 2010.
