Sam Houston nearly picked up its second win of Southland play on Wednesday at home before a late 3-point bucket from McNeese gave the Cowgirls a 66-63 win in a thriller. Lydia Baxter had a double-double for the Kats with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Jenniffer Oramas put in 18 points.
Baxter has had big games each of her last two times out, averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in contests against league-leading Stephen F. Austin and McNeese. She currently ranks sixth in the league with 7.2 rebounds per game and fourth with a .483 field goal percentage.
She had 10 points and five rebounds the first time the Bearkats battled ACU in what was the SLC opener for both teams on December 30 in Abilene. Oramas and Ashleigh Cooper each joined her in double figures, but ACU connected on 14 shots from beyond the arc and scored 29 points in the second quarter alone to cruise to an 83-65 win.
The Wildcats are led by Breanna Wright and her 13.9 points per game, pacing three players in double figures. She drilled eight 3-point baskets and poured in 27 points on Wednesday in a road loss at Lamar and has scored at least 10 points in 12 of her last 13 games overall.
As a team they are shooting at a .435 clip, second best in the league, while the Wildcats’ are the league’s most accurate team from 3-point range with a .343 mark. They have hit a rough skid of late with three losses in their last four games, all coming on the road against the three top teams in the league standings – SFA, Central Arkansas and Lamar.
SERIES vs ABILENE CHRISTIAN
ACU holds a commanding lead in the all-time series with the Bearkats, winning eight of the nine meetings between the teams. Sam Houston will be looking for its first win over the Wildcats since a 63-58 victory in Abilene in the 2014-15 season. Since then ACU has reeled off six wins in a row, including an 83-65 win in Abilene on December 30.
