SAN MARCOS – Sam Houston got into the win column for the first time this season after splitting games Saturday at Bobcat Classic in San Marcos.

Sam Houston (1-3) lost a heartbreaker to Texas State (2-1) in the morning block after leading 2-1 heading into the seventh inning where the Bobcats delivered a go-ahead, 2-run double with two outs. The Bearkats redeemed the loss with a win over Portland State (1-2), starting out fast with three runs in the first inning and holding off a late PSU rally to win 6-4.

Freshman Sheridan Fisher had a big day as she got four hits in nine at-bats with two RBI and scoring three runs. Tiffany Thompson hit well as she got three hits and scored two runs on the day.

The Bearkats were scheduled to take on No. 9 Florida State on Sunday, but inclement weather in the area cancelled the final action of tournament. The Kats will now return home to open up its home slate beginning Friday with the opening of the Bearkat Softball Classic.

Texas State 3, Sam Houston 2 (Box Score)
Despite a stellar outing from freshman Darby Fitzpatrick in her first Bearkat start, Texas State rallied for a pair of runs in their final at-bat to edge the Kats in the first game of the day.

Sam Houston faced off against Bobcat ace Randi Rupp for the second time in three games and despite having just five hits in the game, was in position to pick up the win going into the game’s final inning.

After the Bobcats had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly, freshman outfielder Sheridan Fisher delivered a 2-run single off of Rupp in the bottom half of the fifth to put the Kats ahead 2-1.

Fitzpatrick, who would allow three runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in the game, would toss a clean sixth before running into trouble in the top of the seventh, allowing a pair of singles. Still, the Kats were just an out away from victory before Kourtney Pock delivered a go-ahead, 2-run double with two outs in the seventh to give Texas State a 3-2 lead.

Sam Houston would have a chance to tie or win it in the home half of the seventh as a pinch-hit double from Bailey White with one away in the inning gave the Kats new life. Megan McDonald followed with a single to right field, but pinch runner Kayte Martinez was only able to advance to third. That brought up the top of the Bearkat order, but Rupp was able to coax grounders out of both Fisher and Tiffany Thompson that left the runners stranded.

Sam Houston 6, Portland State 4 (Box Score)
A huge three run first inning helped spark Sam Houston first win this season as they held off Portland State comeback 6-4 in San Marcos.

Sam Houston came out firing as Thompson and Fisher scored when Freshman Brooke Malia batted them in off a deep single up the middle. A few batters later, Malia scored from an Portland State error giving the Kats a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning.

The Kats added another score after Fisher got on base with a single and moved to second base from a fly out into left field. Hitting yet another RBI, Malia brought Fisher in with a double down left line making it 4-0.

Portland State started to battle back from a early hole, they had loaded bases in the bottom of the second inning but Bearkat starter Lindsey McLeod clawed her way out only allowing one score with a walk from PSU’s Alexxis Ponce making it 4-1. In the bottom of the third inning the Vikings added another run with a home run from Ashley Doyle cutting the Sam Houston lead to 4-2.

Megan Crosby hit a RBI ground out to the short stop in the top of fourth which added another score making it 5-2 but the Vikings found a way to battle back into the game as Ponce singled to the right side scoring one and a Tayler Gunesch hit a sacrifice fly scoring another cutting the lead 5-4. Two batters later Thompson looked to insure their lead as she was on third base when an error occurred by PSU making it 6-4.

In the seventh inning freshman right-hander Annie Bailey who got the save took relief from starter McLeod who secured her first win. Bailey secured the win as she forced three up and three down as Sam Houston got their first win of the season taking revenge win against Portland State.
