ARLINGTON- The Sam Houston State Bearkats pulled out a win on the back end of a Sunday doubleheader over UT Arlington to highlight the final day of the UTA Maverick Tournament at Allan Saxe Field.

The Kats fell for the second straight day to DePaul in the opener, 10-0 in six innings, before rallying to take down the host Mavericks in the finale. They will now turn their attention to a Wednesday doubleheader at Texas A&M before heading to Starkville, Miss. for its final non-conference weekend at the Bulldog Slamboree.

Game 1 (Box Score)

DePaul 10, Sam Houston 0 (6 innings)

Sam Houston managed just four hits and kept the Blue Demons off the scoreboard for just one frame as DePaul finished off a perfect weekend with a 10-0 win.

Kennedy Garcia picked up her first win of the season for DePaul while freshman Darby Fitzpatrick fell to 0-3 on the season after allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of her start. Brooke Malia would have a pair of hits, while Megan Crosby and Katie Andrie would each have one each.

DePaul put up a pair of runs in the first inning and then added one more each in the second and third before truly opening up the game in the fifth. A two-run single by Haydn Christensen was followed by an RBI from Jessica Cothren in a three-run inning that made it a 7-0 game.

The Blue Demons would then add three more in the sixth on doubles by Megan Levya and Kate Polucha.

Game 2 (Box Score)

Sam Houston 5, UT Arlington 1

Lindsey McLeod tossed a dominant complete game and the Bearkat offense scored five unanswered runs in the final five innings to close out the weekend with a 5-1 win over the host, UT Arlington, on Sunday afternoon.

McLeod moved to 2-2 on the season with a game that saw her punch out 11 Mavericks and walk just one. She would use 109 pitches to get through the game and allowed just two hits and one run, none coming after the second inning.

Brooke Malia delivered a 2-for-4 afternoon that included her third home run of the season and Megan McDonald used a pair of hits to drive in three runs. Karlee Canada would also have an RBI and a pair of hits, while Katie Andrie had two hits as well as part of a 10-hit Sam Houston attack.

JoJo Valencia took the loss for UTA, falling to 2-4 on the season, after allowing four runs on eight hits with just one strikeout in 5.1 innings in the circle.

The only UTA run of the day was unearned, coming in the bottom of the third on a Bearkat throwing error and giving the Mavs a 1-0 lead. But Sam Houston answered in the top of the fourth with three two-out runs. Canada tied it up by scoring Hunter Ervin with a single and one batter later McDonald went the other way for a two-run double that gave the Kats a 3-1 lead.

McDonald would add another RBI two innings later on an RBI infield single and Malia added another insurance run in the seventh when she blasted a solo homer out to left center field on a 3-1 pitch.

That was plenty for McLeod who retired each of the last 10 hitters of the game, including striking out the side in the seventh to close it out.
