HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State completed a weekend series sweep of UIW to start the 2018 Southland Conference schedule behind a trio of homeruns to win 8-0 in run-rule fashion Saturday afternoon at Bearkat Softball Complex.
Lindsey McLeod used 5.0 innings of work for her second one-hitter of the year, striking out 10 batters and finishing with a total of 29 strikeouts over the three games. With McLeod setting the tone in the circle, Tiffany Thompson also crushed a pair of home runs o bring in three runs on three at bats.
Codi Carpenter got the party started in the bottom of the first where she used an 0-2 pitch to blast a three-run homer into right field to give the Kats an early 3-0 lead and the Bearkats never looked back from there.
The Bearkats return to play in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday against Marist with first pitch starting at 3:00 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Sam Houston started out with back-to-back bases reached by way of a walk and Megan McDonald single. But two outs set up Carpenter who blasted a homerun into right field giving the Kats an early 3-0 edge.
Thompson hit the first of her two home runs in the bottom of the second inning as the leadoff hitter on a 0-2 pitch to put up another Sam Houston run. The Bearkats had another scoring opportunity but left two runners on base from a pop up to the UIW shortstop.
Bearkat leadoff Bailey White shot a single into center field then moved to second on a walk. That’s when Karlee Canada came in to pinch run for White, and Katie Andrie followed with an RBI single to send Canada across the plate.
With the score being 5-0, the Kats found three runs to finish the game early on run rule. A one-out Megan Crosby double set up Thompson’s second homer of the game to give 7-0 lead. Sheridan Fisher finalized the game as he singled into right center to send the winning runner home.
