HUNTSVILLE – Bailey white went 3-for-3 with three RBI, but a pair of big innings was too much for Sam Houston State to overcome as Central Arkansas completed a sweep of the Bearkats with a 10-4 win on Saturday at Farris Field.
The Bears (16-13, 7-2 SLC) used a five-run second inning and a game-sealing four-run sixth inning to take the series sweep over the Bearkats (11-21, 4-5 SLC).
Sam Houston batters totaled seven hits from five different Bearkats, led by White who had three RBI hits on the day. Taylar Fuselier also had an RBi single, while Megan McDonald, Brooke Malia and Tiffany Thompson also hit safely.
Bearkat starter Annie Bailey pitched for an inning in the circle, taking the loss to fall to 2-3 after allowing three runs on two hits. Darby Fitzpatrick also allowed six runs in 4.1 innings with a strikeout before Kaitlynn Dawson finished off the last two outs of the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Bears got a complete-game effort from Rachel Haberman who move to 3-0 on the season. The UCA hurler did not walk a batter and punched out a pair on the day. Offensively they spread the wealth with eight players picking up at least one hit, led by Libby Morris who finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
The Bearkats continue on the road as they head to Texas Southern to play a single game on Tuesday with first pitch coming at 4 pm.
The Bearkats started the game off right as they scored early off the bat of White to go up 1-0. The Bearkat catcher singled into right field sending McDonald across the home plate after she reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. But Central Arkansas matched in the bottom of the inning as Kaylyn Shepherd singled with a runner on third to knot the score at 1-1.
The Kats retook the lead an inning later on a sacrifice fly from Taylar Fuselier, scoring Brooke Malia she opened the inning with a double into right. But then UCA struck for the first of their two big innigs, scoring five times on just two hits to go up 6-2 after just two frames. A double, hit batter and an error loaded the bases and set up Lauren Brooks who drew a walk to tie it up at 2-2. A sacrifice fly from Kate Myers gave the Bears a 3-2 lead before Morris delivered the game's big blow, doubling with two outs to score three runs with two outs in the inning.
Sam Houston would get one of those runs back an inning later in an inning that got going with one away when McDonald shot a single into center field and advanced to second on the throw. That set up White who delivered a run-scoring double into left field to cut the UCA lead to 6-3.
Things would go quiet until the sixth when Sam cut into the UCA lead once again. Thompson started out the sixth with a leadoff double into right, then White brought her home off a single up the middle. But that was as close as Sam Houston woudl get as the Bears then unleashed four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to push the game out of reach. Consecutive one-out UCA singles and a stolen base plated the first UCA run. That was followed by a walk before a wild pitch scored the second UCA run of the frame. Briana McArthur then lined a two-run single up the middle, capping the scoring with the Bears comfortably ahead 10-4.
