CORPUS CHRISTI – The Sam Houston State Bearkats took both games in the doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday to clinch the three-game series at Chapman Softball Field.

Lindsey McLeod (11-9) carried the load with a nine-strikeout complete game in the opener, only allowing three hits to propel the Kats to a 6-1 victory. Annie Bailey would follow that up with a 5.2 innings pitched, only allowing just one run on six hits and one walk with McLeod coming back in the sixth to secure the win.

Bailey White had four combined hits and three RBI for to lead the Bearkat offense. Codi Carpenter and Megan Crosby added three hits apiece with Carpenter adding two RBI in the opener.

The Bearkats will close out the series with the Islanders on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for noon from Chapman Softball Field.

GAME 1 – Box Score
Sam Houston 6, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi 1
McLeod turned in a beauty of an afternoon in the series opener, punching out nine hitters with only walking a batter as the Bearkats took Game 1, 6-1.

Sam Houston jumped put to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning behind the bat of Carpenter who shot a two-run single. That came after Karlee Canada reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Megan Crosby from third before a wild pitch would tack on one more run.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christ tried to respond as they earned a run from a RBI double up the middle by Destiney Diaz with an interference being called on the play scoring Keagen Helson making the score 4-1.

The Bearkats added two more runs through the fifth and sixth inning after Kayte Martinez scored from third on a wild push the lead to 5-1 in the fifth. White tacked another run on using a deep sacrifice fly into left field to bring in Megan McDonald.

GAME 2 – Box Score

Sam Houston clinched the three-games series against AMCC behind Bailey White, who had a two-RBI game to win 3-1 in the day's finale.  

Bearkat starting pitcher Annie Bailey (4-3) pitched 5.2 innings, only allowing one run on six hits and walking one batter before handing the ball off to McLeod for her second appearance of the day. She earned first save striking by retiring four of the five Islanders she faced.

Sam Houston struck first in the top of the third inning where Carpenter blasted a RBI triple into deep right field to score Canada, and White brought Carpenter home with a RBI single through the left side three batters later to jump the lead up to 2-0.

The Kats would add another run again behind the bat of White who used her power to fire a RBI double deep into center field, bringing Tiffany Thompson home from second to give Sam Houston a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning.

AMCC responded in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Destiney Diaz double and Kaylon Johnson RBI single that went through the left side to give the Islanders their first run. McLeod would take Bailey’s place in the circle and would force a ground out to end the inning.

Three up and three down for the Beakats in the top of the seventh gave the Islanders one last chance, but with the first two batters grounding out it was slim. Kaylee Hoppens singled up the middle with two outs allowing the tying run at the plate versus McLeod who struck out her first batter of the game securing the series win.
