LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Sam Houston State Bearkats could not get anything going on Tuesday afternoon against Southeastern Louisiana and ace Rachel Hayes as the Lions shut out the Bearkats in a 7-0 win in the second round of the Southland Conference Tournament at Cowgirl Diamond.
The loss moved the Bearkats (23-32) into the losing side of the Southland Conference Tournament Bracket while Southeastern Louisiana will take on No. 1 seed Nicholls tomorrow. The Bearkats however will take on the loser of McNeese or Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The game will be aired on the Southland Conference Digital Network.
Sam Houston finished with only five hits on the day, with none going for extra bases, a stark contrast from the five extra base hits in their game earlier in the afternoon. Tiffany Thompson was the only Bearkat with multiple hits going 2-for-3 on the day while Sheridan Fisher, Samantha Belongia and Megan McDonald recorded a hit apiece.
Kaitlynn Dawson shouldered the loss for the Bearkats to move to 2-5 on the season after allowing four earned runs on five hits in only 3.1 innings. Southeastern’s Rachel Hayes moved to 16-8 on the day delivering a solid 5.0 innings in which she fanned seven and surrendered only four hits to pick up her third victory against the Bearkats on the season.
Both teams combined for only two hits through the first three innings after stellar pitching and good defensive plays on both sides kept the score deadlocked at zero through the first three frames. Fisher had the lone hit for the Bearkats as it came with two outs in the third inning while Mattie Ort singled up the middle to lead-off the second frame for the Lions.
The Kats had stranded Lions in scoring position in the first three innings, but the Kats luck ran out in the fourth when the Lions scored five runs off of five hits in which the first three Lions singled followed by a one-out RBI double and a two-out single off the bat of Maddie Edmonston.
The Lions added another run in the bottom-half of the fifth when Ali McCoy singled down the right field line to drive in the sixth Southeastern run across home plate on the day. Southeastern would go on to add one more run in the sixth inning thanks to a Mahalia Gibson RBI single to left for her team-leading 55th RBI of the season.
The Bearkats couldn’t recover from the Lions’ huge fourth inning outburst as thy combined for three hits in the final three innings. Southeastern threw in two pitchers to finish out the final two innings with each pitcher recording one punchout and allowing only one hit in the sixth.
