NORMAN – The goal all season for the Sam Houston men’s golf team was to make a return trip to the NCAA regionals. On Monday, they will tee it up in the first round of the Regional in Norman Oklahoma.

On Sunday they completed their practice round at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Head coach Brandt Kieschnick said he liked what he saw from the team.

“The guys look good and we work really hard coming into the postseason,” Kieschnick said. “The golf course is really good and similar to what we play most the year.”

In the previous two regional appearances for the Bearkats, they were shipped to Auburn, Ala., in 2014 and then Seattle, Wash., in 2015, playing in conditions they don’t normally see. While the Jimmy Austin course will be new to the five Bearkat golfers, they will be familiar with the hot windy weather.

“The course is firm and the wind will blow which plays in our favor,” Kieschnick said. “We are excited to get regionals started tomorrow.”

Senior Jake McCrory is the only Bearkat with regional experience, competing in Seattle in 2015.

“We had so much fun my freshman year,” McCrory said. “We didn’t play that great, but it was a great experience. I am excited for what this team can do and I thingk we can compete with the big schools.”

This year’s field includes 14 teams, including six in the top 30 in the Golf Stat rankings.
