HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats have reported back to campus and are set to kick off fall camp on Friday in preparation for the upcoming 2018 season.

The Kats have 23 practices on the schedule prior to opening up the 2018 on Sept. 8 vs Prairie View at Bowers Stadium. Coach K.C. Keeler enters his fifth season at the helm of the Bearkat program, and his squad comes into the year picked as not only the preseason favorite to take the Southland Conference title, but as the No. 4 team in the nation according to the preseason national poll released earlier this week by STATS FCS.

The Bearkats have been one of the best teams in the State of Texas and the FCS over the last decade. They are fourth in wins since 2011 in all of Division I football, ranking only behind North Dakota State, Alabama, Clemson in that time.

 

In the last seven years, the Bearkats have won four Southland Conference Championships, made seven consecutive FCS playoff appearances, reached the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs in five of the last seven years and played in two FCS National Championship games.

 

As one of only three teams to make the FCS Playoffs each of the last seven years, the Bearkats have an overall record of 80-22 since 2011.

 

The Bearkats’ 80 wins are the most wins during that span are the most in a seven-year stretch of any Division I football team in the state of Texas, even ranking ahead of the University of Texas and Texas A&M..
