FRISCO, Texas – Earning the Sam Houston State soccer team’s first weekly award of the season, sophomore Courtney Pawlik was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday.

A key piece of the SHSU back line, Pawlik helped SHSU to a shutout over Utah State and draw at Louisiana. She made several key takeaways and served as the Kats’ primary free-kick specialist on numerous set plays.

The Missouri City, Texas, native put in a full 110 minutes on the pitch at Louisiana while racking up a full 90 minutes at home against Utah State. In addition to her standout performance at home, she limited Louisiana to zero shots in two separate overtime periods.

The Bearkats return home to Pritchett Field for a 6:30 p.m. contest against San Diego on Friday, Aug. 24. For all the latest information on the Sam Houston State soccer team, visit or follow @BearkatsSOC on Twitter.
