Launching today is a new feature on GoBearkats.com called BSN Xtra, an outlet to tell the story of Sam Houston Athletics. With many new changes coming to GoBearkats.com, including some you may have already seen like updated bios and schedule pages, BSN Xtra will be a centerpiece of the official site for Sam Houston athletics moving forward.

Bearkat fans will have the chance to follow the Bearkats like never before with long form features, podcasts, historical pieces, television news style updates and more.

One of the main features of BSN Xtra will be a weekly podcast called Chasing the Cup. Hosted by Ryan Reynolds (not the one you are thinking about), Chasing the Cup will dive into the stories of Bearkat athletes, coaches and administrators, as the Kats look to defend their record 6thSouthland Conference Commissioner’s Cup title. The first episode of Chasing the Cup is available now on the website with Bobby Williams as the guest. Soon all episodes will be available to stream on iTunes using the Podcasts app.

Each week, BSN Xtra will provide new content, taking a look and the games and people that make Sam Houston athletics special in a way that has never been done before. Other features of BSN Xtra will be a segment called Bearkat Breakdown, taking a deeper look at a key play or series of plays that were instrumental to a Bearkat victory.

Kats Eye will be a feature from the prospective of anyone associated with Sam Houston athletics. Features will be personal stories from former and current athletes, coaches and alumni. It will be a way for others to tell their Bearkat story as they see it.

From the Vault will dig into the extensive historical video archive of the Bearkat Sports Network and will replay a single highlight, moment or full game. These throwback features will be spotlighted on BSN Xtra on Thursday’s (see what we are doing there? #TBT).

“It is exciting to be able to do something that very few other colleges in the country are doing right now,” Director of Athletics Bobby Williams said. “We have already seen the quality of work that has been produced by our Bearkat Sports Network team on the ESPN productions, and this will be another way for them to tell our story.”

Much of the new content will be produced by Reynolds, who will take an active role in the development of BSN Xtra. Reynolds, a senior in the Mass Communication department has been a part of Bearkat athletics for several years, working both on air and in production for the Bearkat Sports Network, 90.5 FM and the Houstonian, serving most recently as the Editor-in-Chief. This past summer, Reynolds spent two months in New York, working as an intern for Dan Rather.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me to be able to utilize the skills I have learned at Sam Houston to tell some wonderful stories from all of the teams here,” Reynolds said. “When Jason Barfield called me and pitched this idea early in the summer I immediately jumped at the opportunity.”

This new content will eventually have a single space on GoBearkats.com where it can all be accessed in one location. It will also be available on the new redesigned GoBearkats App, which is currently in development and will be released soon.
