LAFAYETTE, La. – The Sam Houston State Bearkats dropped a close first set and never could get going in falling to Louisiana, 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-13), in final match of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic at Earl K. Long Gym.
Breanne Chausse finished with 10 digs and Taylor Cunningham had eight, along with nine digs, but Sam Houston (3-3) could not stop a Ragin’ Cajuns team who hit .328 for the day, including .484 in the final set.
The Kats trailed by as much as six in the opening set, but continued to claw back, eventually tying things at 24-24 on a kill from Madison Wallace late in the frame. But from there the Cajuns got consecutive kills from Nia Antoine and Dree’Ana Abram to finish out the set, and let wire-to-wire the rest of the way.
Wallace would finish with five kills for the Kats, and Jaclyn Ward added four scores to her 22 assists and eight digs. Addison Miller continued to be steady from her libero spot with 16 kills in just three sets.
Sam Houston will now go on the road next weekend for three matches in Atlanta as part of the Georgia State tournament. They will take on the host Panthers on Friday evening to kick off the weekend before battling Ole Miss and Chicago State on Saturday.
