FRISCO – For the third week this season, senior Taylor Cunningham has earned a weekly honor from the Southland Conference, claiming an Offensive Player of the Week nod on Monday in a release from league officials.
Cunningham also earned defensive player of the week honors for the first week of the season, and just two weeks ago became the first player in recorded history to sweep the Southland’s offensive and defensive player honors in the same week.
Not that she needed it this season, but Cunningham delivered a statement match on Saturday in a win over Abilene Christian. The senior middle blocker took a career-high 59 swings against the Wildcats, but took full advantage with 29 kills and an astonishing one error in the four-set Bearkat win.
Not only did she hit .475 for the match, but Cunningham also added a pair of blocks and finished with a double-double after totaling 16 digs. Her 29 kills were not only a career high, but was also the highest total by any Southland Conference player this season. Cunningham continues to lead the SLC in kills per set with her 3.91 mark nearly a half kill per set higher than anyone else in the league, while her .340 attack percentage is the third best in the SLC.
Cunningham and the Bearkats begin a tough stretch of their season on Tuesday with a home match at 6:30 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Johnson Coliseum. That match will be aired on ESPN+ and kicks off a string of six matches in just 12 days and continues with matches at Nicholls and New Orleans later this week.
