LAKE CHARLES, La. – Lydia Baxter and Jenniffer Oramas poured in 27 points apiece to lead the Sam Houston State Bearkats to a 93-80 win over McNeese on Wednesday night at the H&HP Complex.


Baxter shot 9-of-10 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line while also collecting 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jennifer Oramas matched Baxter’s career-high 27 points going 12-for-14 from the foul line, also adding eight assists and five steals.


As a team the Bearkats (11-9, 6-4 SLC) worked their way to the charity stripe for 41 attempts and converted on 36 of those shots, for a season high of 87.8 percent.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak to the Cowgirls (5-15, 3-6 SLC) that had lasted since 2013, while the win was the first for SHSU in Lake Charles since 2010. 


La’Sha Haynes collected 10 points and 10 rebounds to get a double-double on the night, her third this season and her second in a row.


The game was a game of runs for both teams who each had stretches of scoring, but ultimately it would be the Kats who went on an end of game 18-6 run to close the game out against McNeese who was coming off a narrow loss on Saturday to first-place Lamar.


In all the Kats put players in double figures with Jaylonn Walker also coming off the bench to score 13 for Sam Houston shooting 4-for-9 from the field.



First Half
- Oramas started strong scoring for the Kats going 3-3 from the field, collecting 10 of the 18 points scored in the first quarter
- SHSU went 5-6 from the field midway through the first quarter of play to gain and extend the lead. The run was led by 3-pointers from both Oramas and Walker
- Three Bearkats ended the half in double digits for the scoring column, led by 14 for Oramas, 11 for Walker and 11 for Baxter
- Baxter shot 4-for-4 from the field, 3-for-4 from the free throw line and collected five rebounds
- The Kats opened the second quarter of play by outscoring the Cowgirls 22-6 until 2:10 left to play in the half
- Oramas finished the half with 14 points, two rebounds, three assists and four steals

Second Half 

- A 6-0 run for the Kats led by an and-one play by Amber Leggett gave SHSU a hot start opening the second half
- The Cowgirls answered with a 10-0 run to put the game within three points with four minutes left to play in the third period
- The Bearkats found 10 of their 19 points from the free throw line to end the third quarter
- A strong stretch of play for the Bearkats led to a 18-6 run against the Cowgirls to finish the game with a comfortable lead



The Bearkats return to action on Saturday, February 9 at Abilene Christian. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Moody Coliseum and will be aired on ESPN3.
