McALLEN – The Sam Houston women’s golf team captured its second title of the season on Tuesday, winning the UTRGV Invitational by eight shots over Texas State.

The Kats entered the final round with a six-shot gap between them and the Bobcats. On Tuesday they were the best team again, shooting the low team score of the day with a 301.

“Today the team fought hard through some tough winds and maintained the lead through the beginning of the round,” said coach Tommy Chain. “The wind really picked up on the last 6 holes, and the team remained focus and fought hard to par in the conditions.”

Hanna Alberto finished second in the event after a closing-round 76. She was even on her round when she made the turn, but battled through a 4-over on the back and the conditions worsened.

Jenna Phillips had the low round of the day for the Bearkats, shooting a 73. She played the back 9 at 1-over and moved up to fourth place. Kenlie Barrett also checked in with a top-10 finish, shooting 75 and taking ninth. Leah Alberto was 15th and Tori Gatling finished 19th, putting all five golfers in the top 20.

“Their attitudes were great even though the conditions were a test,” Chain said. “We have some good momentum going and we are improving every week. We are looking forward to carrying the momentum over to the next event.”

The Kats will be in action again next week as they head down to Houston for the HBU Husky Invitational.
