LAREDO – With the second-best team round of the day, the men’s golf team moved up one spot on the leaderboard to take second at the Border Olympics on Tuesday.
William Holcomb posted a top-5 finish, his second in his last three tournaments, after shooting a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. It was his third round under par in the tournament, and now has eight of his last 11 rounds under par.
As a team the Kats posted seven birdies on the back nine to hold off UTRGV as well as No. 45 Campbell. No. 20 Arkansas State ran away with the title, shooting 29-under and winning by 15 shots at the par 72 Laredo Country Club.
“It was a very tough day with very windy conditions and I am proud how they competed,” said head coach Brandt Kieschnick. “We wanted to win but I’m proud of the guys for holding on to runner-up position. There are a lot of positives this week as we head into conference next month.”
The Kats did their damage on the par 3s, shooting a 5-under. They were the only team under par on the par-3 holes, and were seven shots better than Arkansas State.
Camden DeBonis was the biggest mover on the leaderboard for the Kats, climbing 24 spots to 26th place after shooting a 71 on Tuesday. Noah Steele recorded his 2nd top 20 finish of the year with a 75 on Tuesday to finish 19th.
Jack Randle finished 31st with a 77 on Tuesday and Levi Valadez was 53rd after shooting a 76.
