MONTGOMERY, Texas – The Sam Houston State Bearkats dominated singles play to pick up a 5-1 win over UTEP on Monday afternoon at the Walden Tennis Complex.
The win in the team’s final non-conference match of the season gives the Kats 10 wins on the season, which marks the first time since the 2006 and 2007 seasons that SHSU reached double-digit wins in consecutive seasons.
Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Petra Kaszas had the Kats in position to take the doubles point for the second straight match, but UTEP was able to score the point with a 6-3 win on the No. 2 court to go up 1-0 early in the match.
The tables quickly turned when play shifted to the singles court, where the Kats have routinely had the advantage all season long.
Roos Gerritsen was the first one to register a point, knocking off RIne Nozaki in straight sets on the No. 5 court. Lusine Chobanyan was right behind her with a win over Kathleen Percegona, 6-1, 6-3, on the No. 4 court before De La Luz Montalvo made it a 3-1 match with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Erandi Martinez.
The clinching point then came on the No. 1 court from Sahaja Yamalapalli who rebounded from dropping the first set to Kirsten Prelle to take the next two sets for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Kaszas then delivered the final point with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6. Before the No. 2 court went unfinished with Isidora Zivkovic leading by a 6-4, 6-5 margin.
The Kats will now enjoy an extended break before their next match on March 29 in Corpus Christi.
