Sam Houston State broke open a tie game with three runs in the seventh inning to seal a Southland Conference series victory with a 6-3 win over McNeese Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats (17-8, 9-3 in SLC) took advantage of three free passes to load the bases in the seventh with the score tied at 3. Freshman Colton Cowser hit his second sacrifice fly of the game to put Sam Houston on top.
Senior Clayton Harp added a pair of insurance runs with a two-out, two-run single to left field to make it 6-3.
Junior James Kuykendall (1-0) kept the Cowboys (15-13, 3-6) off the board in the seventh and eighth to earn the win, and junior Nick Mikolachak tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.
Senior Hunter Hearn collected the 200th hit of his career with a double to left-center field in the first inning. He added an RBI single in the fifth to help the Bearkats erase a 3-2 deficit.
Sam Houston also scored in the first on a sacrifice fly by Cowser and added a second run in the fourth on an RBI double off the bat of Gavin Johnson.
The Bearkats will battle Rice in a nonconference contest at Don Sanders Stadium Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Sam Houston State beat the Owls 10-9 on March 6 in Houston.
