HUNTSVILLE – With the 2019 outdoor season in full swing the SHSU men’s track and field team is currently ranked No. 31 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) first-week rankings. The results were released on Monday.
The Bearkats saw a huge leap from their preseason ranking (No. 66) thanks in large part to early success from some of their standout athletes. Sam Houston stands at No. 8 in the South Central region and No. 2 in the Southland Conference behind only Abilene Christian.
SHSU saw great success in the indoor season and are hoping for more of the same during the outdoor season. Freshman Jo’Vaughn Martin holds the top marks in both the 100-meter (10.17) and 200-meter dash (20.51) for the program. Senior Chris Jefferson is coming off a 1st place performance in the 200-meter race at the Texas Relays.
Some other notable runners and field athletes: Fabian McCall, Clayton Fritsch, Aaron Akens.
The men and women will compete this week in the Carl Knight Invitational & Multi in Nacogdoches and some athletes will travel to Houston for the Houston Invitational on Saturday, April, 6.
