HUNTSVILLE - Lindsey McLeod set a new Sam Houston State single-game strikeout record and freshman Kyndal Kutac blasted a walk-off home run in the eighth to lead the Bearkats to a 1-0 victory over Houston Baptist in game one of Southland Conference doubleheader Friday at Bearkat Softball Complex.
McLeod came out blazing in the circle, striking out the first six batters of the game. The Huskies finally put a ball in play, a line out to shortstop to start the third, but McLeod struck out the next two batters.
McLeod (11-7) was perfect through seven innings before giving up a double with one out in the top of the eighth. She finished with 17 strikeouts, beating the previous school record of 14 she shared with Melissa Collins.
Kutac launched the second pitch she saw over the wall in center field in the bottom of the eighth to win it. It was her sixth home run of the season.
Sam Houston State 6, Houston Baptist
HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State’s offense came to life in game two as the Bearkats rolled to a 6-2 victory over Houston Baptist to sweep a Southland Conference doubleheader Friday.
The Bearkats (18-19 overall, 10-4 in SLC) broke open a close game with four runs in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Sheridan Fisher led off with a single and came around to score on a single by sophomore Karlee Canada. Juniors Megan McDonald and Tiffany Thompson singled to load the bases, and sophomore Brooke Malia walked to bring in a run. Freshman Kyndal Kutac drove in a run with an RBI single, and sophomore Bailey White walked to make it 6-1.
Sam Houston State scored two runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Canada and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Megan McDonald.
Freshman Regan Dunn got the win in the circle. She had eight strikeouts in seven innings and gave up two runs on three hits to improve to 4-5.
Sam Houston will host the Huskies (14-16, 4-10) in the series finale at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bearkat Softball Complex.
