HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkat offense erupted for 14 hits, including three home runs, blasting Lamar by a 15-6 count in the series opener on Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

Jack Rogers had three hits, four RBI and an inside-the-park home run to lead the Bearkat (18-9, 10-3 SLC) offense which scored 13 unanswered runs on its way to a season-high in scoring. He was one of three Kats, joined by Hunter Hearn and Gavin Johnson, to homer in the game, making a winner of Hayden Wesneski who turned in his seventh quality start of the year.

The right-hander struck out 10, allowing three runs in the third inning while keeping the Cardinals (10-20, 2-11 SLC) off the board for the remainder of his 6.0 innings on the hill. Freshman Steven Beard tossed the final 3.0 innings for his first career save, closing the game out as the pair of arms did not allow a walk while scattering a dozen hits.

Hearn got things going with a 2-run homer in the opening inning off of Lamar starter Noah Sills who allowed nine runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings. The Cardinals pieced together four hits in the third inning, including a game-tying double by Cole Girouard and a go-ahead RBI grounder from Cole Coker; however, the Rogers delivered a two-run double in the next half inning and the Kats responded with four straight innings of at least three runs each to blow the game open.

Rogers’, who was celebrating his birthday on Friday, picked up his first inside-the-park home run of the season. It was was his fourth homer of the season and the first inside-the-parker since Blake Chisolm achieved the feat at Minute Maid Park one year ago in the Kats’ win over Vanderbilt.

Gavin Johnson added the third homer of the game for the Kats with a solo shot to lead off the fourth, while Jackson Loftin had a pair of hits and two RBI for the game.
