HUNTSVILLE - Gonzaga snuck a goal in right before the end of overtime to steal a 2-1 victory from the Sam Houston State soccer team Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.
Sammi Mayock scored the first goal of the season for the Bearkats (0-2-0) to go up 1-0 in the 17th minute. Mayock slammed the ball past Gonzaga goalie Isabel Jones from the top of the box off of an assist by freshman Kenzie Arrington.
Bearkat freshman keeper Tatum Krueger kept the Bulldogs (1-1-0) off the board through the first 80 minutes of the match and finished with 10 saves.
Gonzaga tied things up in the 81st minute on a goal by Erin Healy which was assisted by Payton Stiles. Neither team could breakthrough in the final nine minutes to force overtime.
Good defense by both squads highlighted the overtime period, and it appeared that the Bearkats and Gonzaga would play an extra 10 minutes as the final seconds ticked away. The Bulldogs ended it in regulation, however, when Healy scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway from 18 yards out with a second left in the first overtime period.
Sam Houston State returns to action Thursday when the Bearkats travel to Fort Worth to face TCU. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
