The Sam Houston State women’s soccer team is on the road this week for a match in the Midwest before returning to Texas to face a familiar foe.
The Bearkats (1-4-0) will be in the Windy City Thursday to face Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. The Flames (2-2-1) are coming off a 2-1 loss to Western Illinois on Sept. 5, which snapped their two-match winning streak.
UIC has scored three goals this season, two of which came in 1-0 victories over Toledo and in double overtime against South Dakota.
The Bearkats dropped a 2-1 double-overtime thriller to Louisiana on Sept. 8. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored the first goal in the 10th minute, but Sam Houston State got the equalizer in the 68th minute when freshman Kenzie Arrington scored off an assist from junior Courtney Pawlik, who leads the Kats with three assists and five points.
Louisiana scored the golden goal in 102nd minute off a header.
The Bearkats picked up their first victory of the season in a shutout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sept. 6. Senior Carlota Suarez-Crespo led SHSU with her first two goals of the season, while Pawlik, freshman Brooke Jones and senior Katy Johnson also scored in the 5-0 win.
Sam Houston State’s defense was spectacular against the Golden Lions, only giving up three shots, all of which sophomore goalkeeper Abby DeLozier saved. DeLozier also recorded six saves against Louisiana.
The Bearkats will travel to Prairie View A&M Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. Sam Houston State is 11-0 all-time versus the Panthers with the last win coming 4-0 at Prairie View in 2015.
Prairie View (1-4) defeated fellow Southland Conference opponent Nicholls 2-1 on Sept. 8. The Panthers host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday.
