HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State volleyball teams continued its hot start to Southland Conference play with a three-set victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats (8-8 overall) improved to 4-0 in conference action by taking down the Lady Lions (8-10, 3-2) 25-16, 25-23, 25-21. Sam Houston has won four matches in a row and five of its last six.
Sophomore Breanne Chausse led the Bearkats with 15 kills, while freshman Catherine Krieger and junior Ashley Lewis each had nine. Junior Madison Miles had 18 assists and freshman Morgan Janda finished with 16.
Freshman Samantha Rodgers (four) and sophomores Kaira Hunnicutt (three) and Elise Smith (three) combined for 10 blocks.
Sam Houston State jumped out to a big lead in the first match behind the serving of Janda. The Kats rattled off seven unanswered points to go up 12-3.
The Lady Lions got back to within six, but the Bearkats finished off the set with kills by Lewis and Krieger to end it.
Sam Houston State rallied from behind to win the second set. Southeastern Louisiana was up 16-12, but the Bearkats stormed back to take the lead thanks to kills by Chausse, Rodgers, Smith, Lewis and Krieger to take the set 25-23.
The third set was back and forth before the Bearkats began to pull away when a kill by Lewis made it 14-11. Chausse set up match point with a kill and Krieger put the finishing touches on with a powerful shot at the net to seal the victory.
Sam Houston State stays at home to host Houston Baptist Thursday at 6:30 p.m.a
