ABILENE – The Sam Houston State Bearkat volleyball team was pushed to the brink Saturday afternoon before pulling out a 3-2 (25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 17-25, 15-7) win at Abilene Christian at Moody Coliseum.
With the win, the Kats officially clinching a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament held in Conway, Ark. beginning November 22.
Breanne Chausse led the Bearkats (13-11, 9-3 SLC) with 20 kills and Ashley Lewis was right behind her with 19 kills. The two combined for 103 swings on the match and the team hit .192 during the five combined sets. Ashleigh Traylor led the Bearkats with 22 digs, which ties her season-high record.
The first two sets were nothing but the Kats, as they were dominated in all categories across the board. The third set seemed to be different, as the set went back and forth until ACU took it 25-23. Although the Kats hit .262 in the third set, ACU hit .314.
ACU dominated in the fourth, with 6 of their 13 blocks coming during the fourth set. The Kats hit in the negatives at -0.170 and collected 15 different errors. ACU would wind up going on a 10-2 run, winning the fourth set 25-17.
In the fifth set, the Bearkats played lights out, leading as much as 10-2 with the help of Lewis, Chausse and Krieger’s arms. Catherine Krieger closed out the match with her 12th kill, and the Kats took a 15-7 win.
The Kats return home on Thursday to play in a huge matchup against the second-place team in the SLC, Northwestern State. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
