BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bearkats struck gold on their final night in California.

Senior Dainan Swoope hit two clutch 3-pointers, and senior Chad Bowie made some key shots to lead the Sam Houston State men’s basketball team to a 74-65 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at the Icardo Center Tuesday night. The victory helped the Bearkats (3-3) snap a three-game road losing streak.

Bowie scored a game-high 19 points, and Swoope and senior Kai Mitchell each finished with 12. Junior RJ Smith scored 11 to give Sam Houston State four players with double digits in scoring.

The Roadrunners (2-5) took their first lead of the game with just over seven minutes to go in the second half at 49-47, but unlike road losses at Mississippi State and Central Michigan, the Bearkats responded after losing the lead late.

Swoope drilled a 3 to put SHSU back on top 52-51 less than a minute later. He also cleared the stands when he hit another trey to make it 64-57 with 1:36 to go in the game.

Mitchell, Bowie and junior Demarkus Lampley who scored six along with sophomore Mark Tikhonenko off the bench, all scored down the stretch to seal the victory.

The Bearkats led by as many as 11 points in the first half when Bowie knocked down a 3 to make it 27-16 with 4:38 to go in the half. The Roadrunners were able to close the half on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 29-25 at the break.

Sam Houston State shot 45.3 percent from the field for the game and 43 percent (7 for 16) from behind the arc. The Bearkats also scored 20 points off 22 turnovers.
