HUNTSVILLE - The Bearkats jumped out to a commanding lead and never looked back en route to an 86-51 victory over Randall at Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Sam Houston State (4-3) shot a blistering 52.2 percent from the field to improve to 3-0 at home this season. The Bearkats held the Saints (3-6) to just 27 percent shooting on 74 attempts, including 10 for 35 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc.
Senior forward Kai Mitchell led Sam Houston State with 19 points. Junior forward RJ Smith had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and senior guard Chad Bowie, junior guard Terryonte Thomas and junior forward Bubba Furlong each scored 10 to give the Kats five players in double-digit scoring.
Sam Houston State dominated in the paint, outscoring Randall 58-18. Bowie scored on a layup with 12:21 to go in the first half that put the Bearkats up 19-9, and SHSU lead by double figures the rest of the game.
The Bearkats blew the game open with a 14-0 run during a stretch from the 2:19 mark of the first period to the 17:58 mark of the second to make it 61-20 with baskets by junior guard Demarkus Lampley, who finished with seven points, Furlong, sophomore guard Dajuan Jones, Mitchell, and sophomore guards Zach Nutall and Xavier Bryant.
Brent Clark led the Saints with 13 points, and John Bailey chipped in 11.
Sam Houston State hits the road again when they travel to Edinburg to face UTRGV on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
