SIXTH NCAA BASEBALL REGIONAL APPEARANCE
Sam Houston has earned a berth in the NCAA Division I baseball regionals for the sixth time in school history and the third year in a row. Moving up to NCAA Division I status in 1986-87, the Bearkats played in baseball regionals in Austin in 1987, 1989 and 1996; in Oxford, Miss. in 2007 and in Houston last year.
The Kats’ best NCAA Regional performance came in 2007 at Ole Miss when the Bearkats posted come-from-behind victories over Troy (5-4) and Southern Mississippi (12-11 in 11 innings) to reach the finals before falling to Mississippi. SHSU stands 5-10 in NCAA Regional action, defeating Oklahoma and Indiana State in 1987 and upsetting No. 2 Miami 5-4 in the first round of the 1996 regional.
The Bearkats are the second Southland Conference team to make NCAA Division I tournament appearances in three consecutive years. Lamar was the first in 2002, 2003, 2004 (earning an at-large berth in 2003). Sam Houston is the first league member to punch its ticket for the NCAA event by winning three straight SLC post-season tournaments. The Bearkats went 4-0 in each of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Southland tournaments, rolling up a league record 12-game winning streak in SLC post-season tournament play.
HEAD COACH MARK JOHNSON
Sam Houston head coach Mark Johnson is 11 victories away from becoming the 37th coach in NCAA Division I baseball history to post 1,000 career coaching victories. Johnson ranks No. 17 among active NCAA Division I baseball head coaches in career victories with a 24-year record of 989 wins, 502 losses and three ties.
Each of his three years as Bearkat head coach, Johnson has directed Sam Houston to NCAA regional berths by winning the SLC tournament. His record at SHSU stands at 118-73. Johnson produced an 876-433-3 record in 21 years at Texas A&M, directing the Aggies to 13 NCAA Regional appearances and two College World Series berths (1993 and 1999).
THE BEARKATS IN 2009
Sam Houston posted a 36-22 overall season record in 2009, the Kats’ third consecutive winning season. Prior to Mark Johnson’s arrival in Huntsville in 2007, the Bearkats had gone eight seasons without a winning record and five years without qualifying for the Southland post-season tournament.
The Bearkats were seventh in the final regular season Southland Conference standings with an 18-14 mark. With their victory at Corpus Christi, the Kats became the lowest seeded team ever to win the post-season title.

ALL-SOUTHLAND TOURNAMENT BEARKATS
Catcher Mark Wyatt, outfielder Adam DeLaGarza and pitchers Sean Weatherford and Matt Shelton were all named to the Southland Conference All-Tournament team.
