Teams Up With The Bearkats

The Sports Medicine program at Sam Houston State University seeks to provide the finest preventative education, medical care and physical rehabilitation possible for all Bearkat student-athletes.

Head athletic trainer Hope Parker administers all areas of training and conditioning to enhance athletic performance and injury prevention for each of Sam Houston State's 17 intercollegiate sports. The sports medicine staff provides the best in care for Bearkat student-athletes while providing a hands-on educational program for athletic training students.

Huntsville Memorial Hospital serves as the official healthcare provider for the Sam Houston Bearkats.

In keeping with the Hospital’s slogan “Your Health, Our Community, Our Commitment,” Huntsville Memorial’s Outreach Sports Medicine Athletic Training Service program and a network of sports medicine providers have combined to better serve high school and college level athletics programs.

By joining forces, Sam Houston and Huntsville Memorial Hospital have created a team approach to athletic injury prevention, treatment and the care and rehabilitation of each of the more than 400 Bearkat student-athletes who represent the Huntsville community and the University in NCAA competition in 17 intercollegiate sports.

In conjunction with physicians Dr. Jesse Ward, Dr. Dalton D. Heath II, Dr. Nhu Bruce, Dr. John A. Tanksley and sports medicine specialist Dustin LeNorman, Huntsville Memorial helps the SHSU teams achieve their performance goals. Twelve Southland Conference team championships, 14 NCAA playoff appearances and a pair of Southland Commissioner’s Cup all-sports titles since 2010 are evidence of the success of the partnership.

Working closely with head athletic trainer Hope Parker, the program assists in evaluating injuries; referring athletes to a sports medicine physician as needed; providing follow-up evaluations; serving as a liaison between the physician, parent, coach and athlete; appropriate injury care;  assistance in strength and conditioning program development; providing a detailed follow-up program for coaches; assisting with athletic training supplies and budget development and providing workshops for athletic staff members and student athletic trainers in modalities of athletic training.

Huntsville Memorial Hospital makes these services available to better serve area high school and college level athletics, cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, recreational sports and coaches.

The sports medicine program is housed in three modern training rooms, one each in the Ron Mafrige Field House at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, the baseball/softball field house at Don Sanders Stadium and the training facility in Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

The training rooms have the staff and facilities to accomodate several student-athletes at once with a wide range of equipment capable of meeting the needs to treat almost any injury.

Sam Houston State student-athletes also have access to the expertise of a group of outstanding area doctors and medical specialists.
