April 2, 1906 - Sam Houston fields its first athletic team in the sport of baseball.
October 6, 1912 - Rice defeats Sam Houston State 20-6 in the first football game ever played by either school.
January 29, 1918 - Known then as "The Normals," Sam Houston State's first basketball team defeats Alexander College 35-2 in the first game of an undefeated 7-0 season.
April 1, 1923 - Sam Houston State joins the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA), its first intercollegiate athletics conference affiliation. During the 1923 season, Sam Houston adopts "Bearkats" as the nickname for its athletic teams. The name comes from a slogan of the time "tough as a Bearkat!" The spelling with a "k" instead of a "c" denotes a mythical creature.

February 26, 1925 - A 35-15 victory over Southwest Texas in Huntsville clinches the TIAA basketball championship for Sam Houston with a 10-2 league record for the school's first intercollegiate conference title.
November 24, 1930 - The Bearkats defeat Stephen F. Austin 20-0 in Huntsville to complete an undefeated (9-0-1) season and clinch the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association football championship for Sam Houston's first conference title on the gridiron.
April 25, 1931 - Sam Houston joins East Texas, North Texas, Southwest Texas, and Stephen F. Austin as charter members of the Lone Star Conference.
March 1, 1940 - As a member of the Lone Star Conference, Sam Houston State makes its first national intercollegiate affiliation by becoming a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

December 1, 1956 - Sam Houston State defeats Middle Tennessee State 27-13 in the Refrigerator Bowl in Evansville, Indiana, to complete the Bearkats' only unbeaten, untied football season (10-0).
June 8, 1963 - Fred Beene allows Grambling only three hits as Sam Houston State defeats the Tigers 2-1 to win the NAIA World Series Baseball National Championship in Emporia, Kansas.
December 12, 1964 - The Bearkats and Concordia of Minnesota battle to a 7-7 tie in the NAIA Finals at Augusta, Ga, as the Bearkats become NAIA Football National Co-Champions.

March 2, 1973 - The Bearkats defeat Saint Mary's of San Antonio 61-54 to earn a berth in the NAIA National Basketball Championships in Kansas City, ending the regular season with a 27-0 record with a number one ranking in the Associate Press College Basketball Poll. Xavier College of Louisiana eliminated Sam Houston 67-60 in the second round of the national tournament.
Feb. 9, 1976 - Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, home of Bearkat men's and women's basketball, is dedicated with a 59-54 victory over Southwest Texas State University.

Nov. 29, 1969 - The first Sam Houston State women's basketball team takes the floor as women's varsity sports teams come under the umbrella of the Bearkat athletic department. The first women's softball squad begins competition one year later. |

May 28, 1981 - A game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning gives Sam Houston State a 1-0 victory over Emporia State of Kansas and its first women's sports championship as the Bearkats capture the first ever NAIA National Softball Championship at the national tournament in Conroe, Texas.

June 5, 1981 - Sam Houston State, serving as host for the 30th annual NAIA National Golf Championships at Waterwood National Golf Club, wins its fourth consecutive NAIA National Golf Championship.
June 15, 1981 - The affliliation of Sam Houston State and the other Lone Star Conference members with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level is accepted. The NCAA designates the 1982-83 season as Sam Houston State's first an an NCAA Division II team.

May 17, 1982 - In Sam Houston's first season of competition at the NCAA Division II level, Sam Houston State defeated Northridge State of California 3-2 to win the NCAA Division II National Softball Championships at the NCAA World Series in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
September 26, 1983 - Sam Houston State joins with Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southwest Texas State, and Stephen F. Austin to form the Gulf Star Conference. Competition in the new league begins during the 1984-85 school year.
December 7, 1985 - Coming from two games down to win 15-9 in the fifth game, Sam Houston State women's volleyball team defeats Mississippi University for Women to advance to the NCAA Division II Volleyball National Final Four for the second year in a row.
March 7, 1986 - The Bearkats earn an NCAA Division II National Basketball Championships playoff berth, falling to Delta State 61-59 in the first round of the regionals in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
September 13, 1986 - Bearkat Stadium (renamed Bowers Stadium to honor former Sam Houston State President Elliott T. Bowers in 1990) is opened with a 23-6 victory over Montana State. The 14,000-seat complex is one of the finest in NCAA Division I-AA football.
April 24, 1987 - Sam Houston State completes its move up to the NCAA Division I level (NCAA Division I-AA in football) as the University moves with four other Gulf Star members (Nicholls, Northwestern State, Southwest Texas, and Stephen F. Austin) into the Southland Conference.
May 22, 1993 - The Sam Houston State softball team defeats University of Illinois-Chicago to win the National Invitational Championship softball tournament in McComb, IL.
Nov. 20, 1993 - Sam Houston State defeats Stephen F. Austin in four games to win the Southland Conference post-season tournament and advance to the NCAA Division I volleyball championships, the Bearkats' first appearance in an NCAA Division I national women's championship event.
Oct. 24, 1994 - A crowd of 16,148 (the largest crowd ever to witness a sports event in Huntsville) watches along with an ABC regional television audience as Sam Houston State defeats 14th-ranked Alcorn State (and their NFL-bound quarterback Steve McNair) at Bowers Stadium.

May 23, 1996 - The Sam Houston State baseball team, making its third NCAA Division I Regional playoff appearance, upsets the number two ranked team in the nation, the Miami Hurricanes, 5-4, in Austin for the highest ranked NCAA Division I victory by any Bearkat team.
December 1, 2001 - Alex St. Peter kicks a 20-yard field goal with no time remaining to give Sam Houston State its first NCAA Division I-AA national playoff victory, a 34-31 win over Northern Arizona at Bowers Stadium. The Bearkats went 10-3 to win the Southland football title, reached the quarterfinals of the playoffs, and earned SHSU's highest final national ranking ever (seventh).

March 14, 2003 - After winning their second Southland Conference men's basketball regular season championship in four years, the Bearkats defeat Stephen F. Austin in overtime 69-66 to earn Sam Houston its first NCAA Division I basketball playoff berth. The largest crowd ever to see a Sam Houston State game in Johnson Coliseum (5,169) plus a national ESPN2 cable television audience watch. The Bearkats lost in the first round to Florida one week later.
May 19, 2003 - Bearkat sprinters Chris Stewart, Adam Wooten, and Courtney Boston finish first, second, and third in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and set a school record in the 4x100 relay as Sam Houston State produces its highest Southland Conference point total ever and sents a record number of athletes to the NCAA Regional meet.

April 24, 2004 - Led by Raman Saran, who wins the individual medalist title with a 227 total, Sam Houston State earns its first Southland Conference women's golf championship at the annual league tournament held in Pelican Point, LA. The Bearkat women edge Texas State-San Marcos by one stroke, 937 to 938.

Nov. 20, 2004 - Sam Houston State defeats Texas State-San Marcos 27-9 to clinch its second Southland Conference football championship in four years. The Bearkats end the 2004 season ranked fourth nationally, Sam Houston State's highest final NCAA Division I-AA national ranking ever. Following the season, Ron Randleman retires as football coach after winning 132 games in 23 seasons with the Bearkats.
Dec. 5, 2004 - Down 20 points with 14 minutes to play, Dustin Long leads a Bearkat rally that ends with the winning touchdown and PAT on the final play of the game as Sam Houston defeats Eastern Washington 35-34 in the NCAA quarterfinals on ESPN2 national television. The victory puts the Kats in the NCAA Division I-AA national semifinals against Montana.
May 15, 2005 -- Sam Houston State wins both the Southland Conference men's and women's outdoor track and field championships as the Bearkats host the meet at the Bowers Stadium and Meredith York track complex. The Bearkat men score 188 points while the women post 172.5 points.
May 21, 2005 -- With league championships in football and both men's and women's outdoor track and field and runner-up finishes in two other sports, Sam Houston State wins its first Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup trophy. The coveted award is given to the top athletic program in the Southland Conference each year.

Nov. 14, 2005 - Sam Houston State upsets Big 12 Conference powerhouse Missouri 80-77 in the Bearkats' first NCAA Division I Preseason NIT appearance. The victory pits SHSU against Drexel in the Preseason NIT quarterfinals on ESPN2 national TV. Four months later, the Bearkat basketball team again appears on ESPN2 national TV in the finals of the Southland Conference post-season tournament
May 15 , 2006 - For the second year in a row, Sam Houston wins both the men's and women's outdoor track and field championships. The victories, this year in Arlington, clinch the Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup All-Sports trophy for a second consecutive year.

Sept. 30 , 2006 - The University of Texas Longhorns, winners of the Rose Bowl and the 2005 national championship, play host to Sam Houston at Memorial Stadium in Austin. A crowd of 88,913 see the game, the largest audience ever for a Sam Houston State sporting event.
October 28, 2006 - The Ron Randleman Strength and Fitness Center is dedicated. The 11,000- square foot center was made possible by a gift from Houston businessman Ron Mafrige and is part of more than $9 million of athletic facility improvements that also include Don Sanders Stadium (baseball), Bearkat Softball Complex, Ron Mafrige Field House and the Michael McIver Golf Training Center at Raven's Nest Golf Course.
Feb. 17 , 2007 - The Bearkats win the 2007 Southland Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field championships with a school record point total for SHSU track and field's fifth championship in three years.
May 12, 2007 - Softball shuts out Texas State 1-0 to win the Southland Conference post-season tournament and it Sam Houston its first NCAA Division I softball national tournament appearance
May 16, 2007 - Sam Houston becomes the first Southland Conference university to earn the Southland Commissioner's Cup All-Sports Trophy three years in a row
June 3, 2007 - The Kat baseball team rallies for a 12-11 11-inning victory over Southern Mississippi at Oxford, MS, to reach the finals of the NCAA Regional baseball tournament against host Ole Miss

May 18, 2008 - The Sam Houston women's track and field team completes a sweep of both the Southland indoor and outdoor championships.
May 25, 2008 - For the second year in a row, Sam Houston sweeps undefeated through the Southland Conference baseball tournament to earn a second consecutive NCAA Regional berth
May 23, 2009 - Baseball sets a Southland Conference record with 12 consecutive post-season tournament wins to again sweep to a third straight NCAA regional appearanc
March 13, 2010 - Sam Houston defeats Stephen F. Austin 64-48 on ESPN2 national cable TV to win the Southland Conference men's basketball post season tournament championship. The Bearkats rolled up a 25-8 record during the 2010 season to win their third Southland regular season title. SHSU advanced to the NCAA Division I men's basketball "Big Dance" for the second time, nearly upsetting Baylor in the first round. The Bears from Waco went on to advance to the Elite Eight.
October 23, 2010 - Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin play before the largest crowd ever to witness a Southland Conference football game as more than 24,000 fans fill the lower bowl at Reliant Stadium for the annual "Battle of the Piney Woods." The crowd is the eighth largest ever to see the Bearkats play an athletic event.
