Summary of 2011/12 SAAC Community Whereabouts

Upon turning in SHSU Athletics Fall 2011 pop tab collection, the Ronald McDonald House in Houston, Texas noted this donation of tabs to be the largest single donation they have ever received. The rather large delivery of pop tabs collected from aluminum cans by the Sam Houston athletes were delivered by S.A.A.C representatives who were able to tour the facility and see the generosity of this foundation. Every semester the Sam Houston athletes collect the pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. The House presents the tabs to a local recycling center, where the tabs are weighed and the House receives a check to assist the children and families it supports.

Another service project lead by the S.A.A.C. team, which has taken place in the 2011/12 year, was the School Supply drive. Each of the 17 Bearkat teams was assigned an item from a school supply wish list to collect. Once the supplies were gathered the items were brought to Sam Houston Elementary, where the students will put the supplies to great use.

While the Bearkats joyfully participate in these yearly community service projects there is one more to look forward to in the spring of 2012, suggested by Yaser Elqutub (Northwestern State Representative and the Southland National SAAC representative). The new service project is called "Samaritan's Feet", and is to be participated by all of the Southland Conference teams. This organization helps to provide shoes for underprivileged children around the world
